India and Russia have agreed to expand and diversify their trade beyond oil and defence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin finalised an economic cooperation programme that will broaden their trade relationship through to 2030. Putin received a notably warm welcome during his two-day state visit, his first trip to New Delhi since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The visit also comes as India holds talks with the United States on a trade deal to roll back the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump over India’s purchase of Russian oil. Putin said Russia is ready to guarantee uninterrupted fuel supplies to India. On Friday, he was given a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and a 21-gun salute as his convoy arrived. Modi, who greeted him with a warm hug on Thursday evening, described India’s partnership with Russia as a ‘dhruv tara’, a constant guiding light.
