Australia has become the first country to ban social media for users under 16. The law took effect on 10 December, and major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Snapchat and Reddit began locking out under-16 accounts. Companies must remove existing accounts, block new ones and verify user age through tools such as selfie checks, government ID uploads, bank card verification and AI-based age inference. Non-compliance may lead to fines of up to 33 million US dollars. Teens posted goodbye messages, while Meta and Reddit raised concerns. Denmark, Norway, Malaysia and parts of the United States are studying similar measures.
