New BFFs in town: A study published in Scientific Reports has concluded that orcas and dolphins appear to be working in salmon hunting alliance, raising questions about the future of the complex marine ecosystems these animals inhabit.
Professor Sarah Fortune, from Canada’s Dalhousie University, has said dolphins, being smaller predators, might benefit from increased accessibility and “higher quality prey” when hunting alongside killer whales.
The orcas could, in turn, benefit from the dolphins’ echolocating, leading to “an array of acoustic sensors” that could prevent prey from escaping its mouth.
