Deakin University Chair Prof Catherine Bennett warns about a new strain of influenza A and increased activity.
“A particular strain of influenza A … seems to have acquired some mutations,” Ms Bennett said.
“Having any kind of respiratory illness in summer just feels so much worse.”
More than 95,000 infections have been recorded in the state this year.
