FIFA boss Gianni Infantino said he has “total confidence” in Mexico’s ability to host FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in July despite the violence that has gripped the country in recent days.
Widespread violence erupted following a military operation that killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho’, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel – one of the world’s most dangerous criminal organisations.
The incident sparked road blockades, flight cancellations, and suspension of sporting and school activities, raising international concerns about Guadalajara’s readiness as a host city.
The Colombian Football Federation’s president backed Infantino and said he was “delighted” that Colombia’s first two qualifying matches would take place in Mexico City and Guadalajara.
