Two Australians reportedly aboard US sub that struck Iranian warship

Reports have emerged claiming two Australians were onboard a US submarine when it sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka.

According to Nine newspapers, the Australian sailors were on board the nuclear-powered submarine, as part of the AUKUS training rotation.

The submarine struck the frigate IRIS Dena, killing more than 80 soldiers onboard.

If the pair were onboard, it would be the first direct involvement of Australian defence personnel in the current Middle East conflict.

The federal government is refusing to deny whether Australians were on board the submarine, adding that it won’t disclose any specific information.
