Hungary elects Peter Magyar as Prime Minister after 16 years of Orban rule

Peter Magyar has been sworn in as Hungary’s new Prime Minister.

The centre-right leader defeated nationalist former prime minister Viktor Orban, who had been in power for 16 years.

His Tisza party now holds a constitutional majority, giving it the ability to amend or reverse policies introduced under Mr Orban’s government.

He has said his priorities include strengthening democratic institutions and addressing political corruption.
