Spain’s call for a unified European Union army has triggered a major debate over NATO’s future, Europe’s strategic autonomy, and whether it can still rely on the United States for long-term security. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares says Europe needs its own military deterrent to reduce dependence on Washington, especially amid growing uncertainty under Donald Trump’s presidency, the Iran war fallout, and fears of U.S. troop withdrawals from Europe. As NATO faces renewed questions over its collective security guarantees, Brussels is now actively debating military independence, EU defence structures, and whether Europe can realistically prepare for a future where American protection is no longer assured.
