US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have begun high-stakes talks in Beijing during Trump’s first official visit to China in nearly a decade. The summit opened with full state honours at the Great Hall of the People, including a 21-gun salute, military honours and a state banquet.
But behind the grand optics, the central focus of the summit was Taiwan. According to China’s official readout, Xi warned that the Taiwan issue remains the ‘most critical matter’ in US-China relations and cautioned that mishandling it could push the two countries toward ‘collision or even conflict.’ Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly vowed reunification, by force if necessary.
