Workers at BHP’s Port Hedland iron ore operation, Australia’s largest, have voted to strike for the first time since 2008, threatening to halt operations at the nation’s busiest iron ore port. The 450 workers are demanding better pay, safer conditions and equal contracts, with tradies citing wage disparities of up to $40,000 for the same work. A strike could cost BHP over $120 million per day and the state $7 million in lost royalties.
