International aid is beginning to reach Venezuelan communities, and international rescue teams continue to join those on the ground searching for survivors.
El Salvador’s government has sent a contingent of 300 rescuers and paramedics, as well as 50 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including medicine and essential supplies.
“Our mission, our motivation, will be to search for human lives under the rubble,” Erick Portillo, director of Cruz Verde in La Libertad, said.
Panamanians have rushed to donation centres to help quake-hit Venezuelans, gathering food supplies, hygiene products and cleaning materials.
Other aid contingents from around the world including Spain and Mexico have been deployed to Venezuela carrying rescue teams to support emergency efforts.
As the United Nations welcomes offers of solidarity and support from around the world, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric warns the recovery could take months.
“This will be a long haul. There will be the immediate response to the devastation of the earthquake, but it will continue for months to come,” he said.
