The United States is strengthening its nuclear command-and-control capabilities with a new fleet of E-130J Phoenix II aircraft — the next-generation ‘Doomsday Planes’ designed to keep Washington’s nuclear command chain alive even after a catastrophic attack. Built for the U.S. Navy’s TACAMO mission, these aircraft can communicate with deeply submerged ballistic-missile submarines and relay orders to maintain America’s second-strike capability. The E-130J is set to replace the ageing E-6 Mercury fleet, with the Navy planning to acquire 31 aircraft.
