Germany’s Tiger I became one of World War II’s most feared tanks, but enemy guns were not responsible for many of its losses. Mechanical breakdowns, enormous fuel consumption and the difficulty of recovering the fifty four tonne machines repeatedly left Tigers stranded on the battlefield. As Allied attacks crippled German supply lines, fuel shortages made the situation even worse. Retreating crews were often ordered to destroy disabled tanks rather than allow their technology to fall into enemy hands. This episode reveals how logistics ultimately became one of the Tiger’s greatest weaknesses.
