Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as the world’s largest regional grouping, saying its member states represent about half of the global population.
Speaking at the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Putin said the organisation had evolved significantly since its establishment 25 years ago and had become an influential centre of the emerging multipolar world.
Putin said Russia supports efforts to make the SCO more effective, while identifying stronger trade ties among member states as a key priority.
He also highlighted the growing use of national currencies in trade, saying more than 98% of Russia’s payments with its SCO partners are now conducted in national currencies.
