High energy lasers could dramatically change the economics of future air defence as militaries struggle with the cost of destroying cheap drone swarms using expensive missiles. Directed energy weapons can damage drones with concentrated heat while costing only a fraction of a conventional interceptor launch. Their virtually unlimited magazine makes them especially attractive against waves of low cost aerial threats. But rain, fog, dust and the need to maintain a steady beam create serious battlefield limitations, particularly against distant or hypersonic targets. The future may therefore belong to layered defences where lasers destroy cheaper threats while missiles remain reserved for the fastest and most dangerous weapons.
