New York City is imposing sweeping restrictions on artificial intelligence across its massive public school system. Students through eighth grade will be barred from using generative AI, chatbots and AI tutors in classrooms, while high school access will remain tightly controlled. Teachers can still use approved AI tools for selected tasks, but grading, counselling and other sensitive decisions must remain human led.
Officials say the new approach is designed to prevent overreliance on technology while keeping AI use age appropriate. With more than nine hundred thousand students affected, New York’s experiment could influence how schools across America handle AI in education.
