Bangladesh is facing a deadly measles outbreak, with at least 986 children reportedly dead since March and suspected and confirmed cases crossing 180,000.
Hospitals across Bangladesh are struggling to cope with a surge in critically ill children, most of them between six months and five years old. Health authorities say more than 1,000 suspected measles cases are now being reported every day.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through coughs and sneezes. Young children are particularly vulnerable, with the disease potentially causing severe complications including breathing difficulties and brain swelling. Doctors say many children are arriving at hospitals in critical condition, while malnutrition is making it harder for some children to fight the infection.
