Rib contouring surgery raises ethical concerns in Australia | ABC NEWS

Experts are warning social media promotion of a new rib contouring surgery could fuel pressure to achieve extreme body shapes.

The procedure involves reshaping the ribs to create a smaller waist and has gained popularity among influencers.

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons says complications can include a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) and haemothorax, where blood pools between the chest wall and lungs. It says these complications have occurred in about one in 5,000 patients.

The ABC does not suggest companies or people promoting the surgery are breaking the law.
