Iran appears to be preparing for a prolonged confrontation with the United States as activity at a deeply buried underground facility near the Natanz nuclear site raises fresh questions about Tehran’s military and nuclear plans.
Satellite imagery analysed by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) indicates increased construction activity at Iran’s so-called Pickaxe Mountain facility, with work reportedly shifting towards internal construction. Road activity has also increased, while entrances and access points appear to be undergoing reinforcement. However, CSIS has cautioned that there is no confirmed visual evidence that centrifuges have been moved into the facility or that it is currently being used for uranium enrichment.
