Greenland and Antarctica have together lost about eleven point three trillion tons of ice between nineteen seventy nine and twenty twenty three, according to a new satellite based assessment. Researchers combined dozens of independent estimates to build a detailed record covering five decades of polar ice change. The findings show that glacier outflow into the ocean accounted for about eighty four per cent of the combined loss, while surface melting contributed sixteen per cent. Scientists say warming ocean temperatures are playing a major role in accelerating glacier flow from the ice sheets. The lost ice has already raised global average sea levels by about one inch.
