U.S. President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, as Russia-Ukraine attacks continue to intensify. The roughly 40-minute talks focused on efforts to end Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now in its fifth year. Zelenskyy described the meeting as positive and productive, saying both the US and Ukraine want to see the war ended before winter, and that the two sides discussed potential de-escalatory steps that could open the way to diplomacy. Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters, Zelenskyy said Ukraine remains ready to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow stops targeting Ukraine’s energy system, adding that Kyiv is prepared for a mutual pause on attacks against diesel, refineries, electricity, heating and water infrastructure — but clarified there had been no discussion with Trump about Ukraine unilaterally ending attacks on Russian oil facilities. Zelenskyy also held separate talks with the leaders of the United States and United Kingdom during his time in New York for the UN General Assembly, and warned in a Telegram post that Russia was planning a new massive attack against Ukraine.
