All members of the royal family are expected to bow or curtsy to the King and Queen when they’re greeting for the first time that day, but for the rest of the royal family it gets a bit more complicated.

Royal expert and editor of Debrett’s Wendy Bosberry-Scott explained to PEOPLE that “Women of the royal family who marry in like Kate and Meghan gain their titles by marriage and, therefore, are of a lower rank than those born into their titles.”

Therefore, according to Debrett’s, an authority on British nobility and etiquette, the Princess of Wales can outrank blood members of the royal family — but only when she’s with her husband Prince William.

When Catherine is not accompanied by William, “Princesses of the Royal Blood, such as Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, rank above [her],” and she would have to curtsy to them.

So, “when the wives are with their husbands, their status is elevated to reflect the fact that the men are present.”

“As the men have a higher rank than the princesses (Anne, Eugenie, and Beatrice) they have precedence, and this higher rank is reflected on their wives, so they are then moved ahead.”
