Power cuts, water shortages and crumbling roads are undermining Johannesburg’s economy and threatening its ability to retain businesses and attract investment. Can South Africa’s City of Gold turn itself around? On this episode of Next Africa, Jennifer Zabasajja examines the financial pressures and political instability behind Johannesburg’s decline, and whether upcoming local elections could help change its course.
Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busi Mavuso explains why companies are being forced to work around failing public services. Ninety One founder and CEO Hendrik du Toit discusses the investment needed to rebuild the city, while Eskom CEO Dan Marokane explains how the utility moved from rolling blackouts to excess generating capacity—and why Johannesburg still faces outages. Plus, Bloomberg South Africa Bureau Chief Alex Parker assesses the city’s infrastructure backlog and prospects for recovery.
