Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has criticised Labor’s commitment at this year’s Garma Festival, saying “the scale of the challenges in Indigenous Australia are much bigger than the scale of the response that I have heard from Prime Minister Albanese today”.
“We have 19 indicators in Closing the Gap, four of those are going backwards, and what really concerns me is that they’re indicating a lack of progress, in fact a retreat, in critical areas relating to children and education and youth incarceration.
“We know that education is vital for the future of young people wherever they are in Australia. So it’s so disappointing to see this plan that the prime minister calls a ‘plan for economic empowerment’ is failing in these critical areas.”
The Opposition leader was not in attendance at the Garma Festival in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Instead, Ley and some shadow ministers visited Western Australia’s Kimberley region to meet with locals in remote and Indigenous communities.
