UN concerned over expanded Israeli offensive in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel intends to take military control of all of Gaza, despite intensifying criticism at home and abroad over the devastating war in the Palestinian enclave.

Under international law, the Israeli occupation of the Gaza strip and the West Bank is considered illegal.

The UN human rights office said last week almost 1,400 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food since 27 May. Nearly all were killed by Israeli fire, it said.

More than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials, since October 7 2023 when Hamas killed 1,200 people and abducted 251, according to the Israeli government.
