The Duchess of Kent’s funeral will be the first Catholic ceremony held for a member of the British royal family in modern history, and King Charles—the head of the Church of England—will be in attendance.

When she converted to Catholicism in 1994, the Duchess became the first senior royal to convert to the religion publicly in more than 300 years.

The Duchess’ funeral is set to take place on 16 September at Westminster Cathedral before her coffin will be taken to the royal burial ground in Windsor’s Frogmore.
