Love on the Spectrum US star Dani Bowman says “autism is not something to cure, it is part of who we are” in response to recent claims by US President Donald Trump about the condition.
Trump recently promoted unproven and in some cases discredited ties between the painkiller Tylenol (paracetamol) and autism.
“My mum never took Tylenol while she was pregnant with me or my sister. My dad has autism. My sister has autism. I have autism. It really has to do with the genetic linkage,” Bowman said.
Trump also announced a drug called leucovorin (folinic acid), currently used to treat the side effects of cancer drugs, will be made available to treat symptoms of autism in some children – but health experts warn there is limited evidence for its efficacy.
