Russian freediver Alexey Molchanov has set a new world record, plunging 126 metres below the Mediterranean Sea off Cyprus.

The feat, achieved at the AIDA Freediving World Championships, broke his previous record of 125 metres set last year.

Molchanov competed in the constant weight bi-fins category, considered one of the sport’s toughest disciplines.

It marks his 40th world record since beginning freediving in 2004.
