During a historic visit to the Vatican, King Charles and Pope Leo XIV prayed together at a church service in the Sistine Chapel.

The ceremony became the first time that a British monarch has publicly prayed alongside a Pope since the 16th-century Reformation when Henry VIII’s Church of England dramatically broke from the Catholic Church in Rome.

Before the service, the two leaders exchanged gifts in the pope’s library. Charles gave Pope Leo an Icon of the 11th-century English king St Edward the Confessor and the pope gifted a mosaic of Christ Pantocrator.

Charles had originally planned to undertake the symbolic public act of worship in April, and although the the King and Queen Camilla did briefly meet Pope Francis that month, he wasn’t well enough to continue the service.
