Violent clashes erupted between protesters and police during anti-government protests in Mexico City. Police fired smoke bombs and tear gas as protesters hurled stones. The clashes injured at least 120, including 100 police officers. The Mexico City Security chief said the police arrested 20 people for theft and assault. Clashes followed Gen Z protests at the historic public square, the Zocalo, and the National Palace, where President Claudia Sheinbaum lives and works. Demonstrations were fueled by the domestic “Sombrero Movement”, which emerged after the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was known for his fight against organised crime. Protests came amid growing criticism of President Claudia Sheinbaum over her security policies after several high-profile murders in Mexico.
