A scuffle broke out in Imphal on the eve of the Sangai Tourism Festival 2025 as protesters clashed with security forces. The protesters, led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and internally displaced persons (IDPs), attempted to storm the festival venue at Hapta Kangjeibung, demanding a boycott of the event. They argued that the festival should not be held while thousands remain displaced and the ethnic conflict persists in Manipur. Security personnel used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd.
The protests highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis and opposition to celebrating amid fresh ethnic tensions and displacement in the state. The festival was scheduled to run from November 21 to 30, 2025, but the protests underscored the community’s demand for peace, rights, and restoration of normalcy before tourism festivities proceed.
