As of Friday morning, the Hong Kong Fire Service had mostly contained the deadly fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex, which began on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire Service deputy director Derek Chan said the operation was “almost complete” but they were still battling flames in four units and damping down other apartments.
The death toll is now at 94, making it Hong Kong’s deadliest fire since 1948, when 176 people were killed in a warehouse blaze.
Police arrested two directors and an engineering consultant of Prestige Construction, a firm contracted to perform maintenance on the buildings. Police said those arrested were under suspicion of manslaughter for using unsafe materials.
