Sri Lanka is facing a nationwide weather emergency as torrential rains, flooding and landslides have killed dozens and displaced thousands. Entire communities in Badulla and Nuwara Eliya have been engulfed by mudslides, while roads, railways and bridges have been blocked by swollen rivers and fallen debris. With 600 homes damaged and more than 56 dead, emergency crews are struggling to reach cut-off areas. Authorities have shut down government offices and schools, as a low-pressure system off the southeast coast continues to intensify, threatening even more extreme weather in the hours ahead.
