Australia is through to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup after a tense nil‑all draw with Paraguay. It’s only the third time the Socceroos have made it this far.

Back home, World Cup pandemonium swept Brisbane as thousands packed the live site to watch Australia advance. Close calls from a local talent kept fans on edge, but the crowd walked away thrilled with the draw and hopeful for a record run.

To health concerns, authorities are warning there could be more bird flu cases in South Australia as samples from five more dead giant petrels are tested. One has already returned a suspected positive result for the H5 strain.

And overseas tonight, at least 235 people are dead and more than 1,500 injured after Venezuela’s biggest earthquake in more than a century. Rescue missions are struggling to reach those trapped in the rubble as limited emergency resources slow the response.
