In Australia, products are typically sold with a sun protection factor of 15, 30 and 50+, but many Aussies may not really understand what difference it makes.

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, pharmacist Betul Altun said, “The difference between SPF 30 and 50 is just over 1%. SPF 30 blocks UVB rays, which are the sun-damaging rays, by 96.7% and SPF 50 will block it by 98%.”

While it doesn’t sound like a massive gap, Betul said it makes a world of difference when you’re out in the sun.

She added, “SPF 30 basically means that you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than what you would without sunscreen. For example, if it takes you five minutes to burn when you’re not wearing sunscreen, if you’re wearing an SPF 30, that extends you 30 times five minutes. SPF 50 will extend it 50 times five minutes.”
