German Chancellor Friedrich Merz defended Germany’s foreign and security policy commitments while facing political pressure at home, saying Germany’s security cannot be separated from the fate of Europe. Speaking at the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, Merz pointed to the attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, which the German government has blamed on Russia. Berlin says its security assessment found Russian involvement in the incident, while Moscow has rejected the accusations. Germany subsequently announced measures including the closure of Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn and restrictions affecting the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin.
