Despite the assumption that retirement would lead to a sudden increase in loneliness, Monash University’s Dr Johannes Kunz said that “our study did not find this to be the case”.

After tracking nearly 7,500 Australians aged between 55 and 75 over two decades, Dr Kunz explained that “We found that their loneliness didn’t change in the three years before retiring or in the three years after.”

While loneliness is still a “significant public health concern” for older Aussies and has “far-reaching implications”, Monash found it’s not a “cliff” that you fall off the moment you finish work.

The paper, published in Nature, noted that “These findings suggest individuals mostly adapt to retirement successfully, and that retirement itself may not substantially alter older adults’ social connectedness.”

The study also found that the individuals sense of loneliness wasn’t impacted by whether they were single, had grandchildren, volunteered, or on lower incomes — though the experience of losing a spouse can have a profound impact on the perceptions of loneliness.

Dr Kunz added, “It doesn’t seem to be the transition out of work, but rather the general effect of aging that raises loneliness as people age.”
