Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Edward McCartney from Food Safety Plus claimed that your fridge doesn’t always necessarily keep your food and drinks safe to eat.
He said, “One of the most common misconceptions is that a fridge keeps everything safe to eat, no matter how they are stored. In reality, overpacking a fridge can block airflow, leading to uneven cooling and potentially unsafe temperatures.”
Plus, it turns out that the fridge door isn’t actually the best place for your milk and eggs.
Edward explains, “Because the door is exposed to frequent temperature fluctuations when opened, items like milk, eggs, and other highly perishable foods are better stored on the middle shelves where the temperature is more stable. The door is best reserved for condiments, sauces, and other less temperature-sensitive items.”
Edward says the best way to avoid the risk of food-borne illness is to ensure you’re storing items in the correct sections of the fridge, labelling leftovers with dates, and setting your fridge to the correct temperature, ideally between 0°C and 5°C.
