On the third day of the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pushed back against criticism aimed towards an Australia-organised United Nations climate event in Fiji and Tuvalu next month.
The event will take place before this year’s UN climate change conference, and was organised as part of a compromise between Australia and Türkiye, with the main conference to be held in Antalya, Türkiye, rather than Adelaide.
A reporter asked Albanese whether the event was an appropriate use of Australian taxpayer money, as it will only be attended by five world leaders from outside the Pacific.
The lead-up event was designed to highlight the impact of climate change on low-lying Pacific nations and the need to take dramatic action to rein in carbon emissions.
