Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has sent a message of support to the Socceroos following their defeat to the US at the FIFA World Cup, saying the team “certainly gave everything on the field there in Seattle” and that the country is “proud” of them.
Talking about the moment one of the match referees went down with a cramp and was helped out by the players, Albanese said: “It was something I haven’t seen before”.
“We look forward to the game against Paraguay and to us qualifying through to the next round … so to (Socceroos coach) Tony Popovich and all of the Socceroos, well done,” he said.
With the USA now likely topping group D, Australia could remain in second or slip to third, depending on the result between Türkiye and Paraguay. The final standings will then be decided in the final group matches.
Their win against Türkiye has made it more likely that they will still get out of the group stage, with one game left to play.
