Indian seafarers are increasingly caught in the crossfire of conflicts across West Asia. From Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to the escalating US-Iran confrontation around the Strait of Hormuz, commercial shipping routes are becoming increasingly dangerous for Indian crew members. The latest incident has claimed another Indian life. The Indian-flagged cargo vessel Al-Jusufi was struck by an unidentified aerial object off Oman’s coast on November 2. Fourteen Indian sailors were on board. Thirteen were rescued, but one seafarer, Gandhar Nahim Ajij from Gujarat, succumbed to his injuries. India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the death and said the government was coordinating assistance for the survivors and the repatriation of the deceased sailor’s remains. Josh Barnes brings you the story on Firstpost Live.
