Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australian will recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations general assembly in September, reiterating that a two-state solution is the region’s “best hope to break the cycle of violence”.
“The international community’s vision for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East always encompassed two states – living side-by-side with internationally recognised borders,” Albanese said at Parliament House in Canberra after a cabinet meeting this morning.
It comes after Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, openly criticised Australia and other European nations for considering Palestinian recognition, describing the act as “shameful”.
