Australian soldier dies in training accident in NT

A 28-year-old Australian soldier has died, and five others are injured, following a routine training exercise in the Northern Territory.

Corporal Brendan Hannam died as a result of a single-vehicle rollover.

It happened at the Mount Bundey Training Area, a site around 130km from Darwin used by the Australian Defence Force and its allies.

Two soldiers remain in a Darwin hospital in a stable condition. The other three are being monitored in a hospital ward at Darwin’s Robertson Barracks.

Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle described Corporal Hannam as a “much beloved junior leader”.

This latest incident marks the second Australian defence member to die in training this year.

SBS NT Correspondent Josh van Staden has the details.
