Australia will allow social media account holders to opt out of the powerful algorithms pushing dangerous and divisive content into users’ feeds, part of new laws designed to boost online safety.
The prime minister said the digital duty of care bill was not about government control, and added tech companies could face penalties of more than $100m for breaches.
The communications minister, Anika Wells, said the bill would require tech platforms to protect adults from illegal content and children from six serious harms that are outlined under the bill.
