The Round of 16 knockout match had been overshadowed by an off-field controversy involving an American player, the US President Donald Trump and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino.
On the pitch, the 4-1 result means all three co-hosts are out of the tournament and all the quarterfinalists will be from Europe, South America and Africa.
