US Senator Bernie Sanders has warned about the growing threat of AI and said the industry needs to be regulated with binding safety rules, calling US President Donald Trump’s stance on the issue “truly embarrassing”.
Trump has dismissed fears that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity, calling them a hoax and rejecting global calls to put guardrails around the fast-moving technology. He also said the US could not afford to lose a technological race with rival China on this issue.
Appearing to respond to those comments, Sanders told a gathering: “A superintelligent AI that escapes human control will not simply be an American problem, it will not be a Chinese problem … it will be humanity’s problem.”
