Revellers around the world will ring in 2026 by eating 12 grapes within the first minute of the new year, with each grape representing one month.

Anthropology professor Michael Di Giovine told Vogue that while it’s difficult to work out exactly why the tradition started, “many say it originated only in the late 1890s [or] early 1900s to use up a surplus of grapes.”

“But most Spaniards would say it was in 1909, when merchants from Alicante and Murcia handed out grapes… in Madrid to encourage and create this tradition.”

Now, the tradition – which is rumoured to usher in a year of good luck and prosperity – is spreading around the world.
