Explosions rocked two sanctioned tankers from Russia’s shadow fleet in the Black Sea near the Bosphorus Strait, with Turkish authorities releasing vision of flames and thick smoke billowing from the tanker Kairos.
Turkey’s Transport Ministry said Kairos reported an “external impact” before catching fire, with all 25 crew members rescued as emergency vessels rushed to the scene.
A second tanker, Virat, was also reportedly struck further east, with heavy smoke detected but its 20 crew “in good condition”.
Both vessels were sailing under sanctions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine, amid ongoing risks from drifting mines in the region.
