Iran’s navy claims it has captured a US military unmanned underwater vehicle at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ official Sepah News identifies the vehicle as a Dive-LD and says it was seized during what Iran describes as a complex intelligence operation. The claim comes amid escalating US-Iran tensions and follows US strikes on five Iranian oil tankers.
The Pentagon responds by confirming that a US underwater drone malfunctioned more than a day earlier while surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations, but does not confirm whether it was the same device Iran says it captured. A US military spokesperson describes the drone as an older, defective model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried classified sonar or radar equipment, leaving the fate and identity of the captured vessel disputed.
