An 18-year-old woman has been identified as the gunman behind a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, that left nine people dead before she took her own life.
Police say Jesse Van Rootselaar fatally shot her mother and stepbrother at home before killing a teacher and four students at a local school.
Authorities confirmed she had a history of mental health concerns and had previous contact with police, but say it is too early to determine a motive.
Prime Minister Mark Carney called the attack a “very difficult day for the nation”, ordered flags flown at half-mast, and urged Canadians to come together as the nation mourns one of its deadliest shootings.
